Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan said on Tuesday (3 May) that he did not want to get distracted by comments made by members of the People’s Action Party (PAP) other than Murali Pillai ahead of the Bukit Batok by-election.

Chee also said that he was getting “very confused” as to who his PAP opponent is in the by-election this Saturday (7 May).

“I thought it was Mr Murali. It’s turning out to be everybody else except for him. He’s not saying anything,” Chee said during a walkabout in Bukit Batok when he was asked by reporters about comments made by Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin on Facebook.

On Monday (2 May), Goh said, “Don’t kick up a fuss over CSJ rudely shouting at me in Jurong. Words or actions do not define a person; character is not important for a would be MP, so say SDP.”

“And the fox to the farmer, “Hire me to look after your hen house. I have the perfect plan”,” Goh added.

In response, Chee said, “Seriously, last night after I came out, I was just out again… I didn’t finish until about 11.30pm. I got home and I was just so tired and went straight to bed. 5.30am this morning I picked myself (up) again, I haven’t had time to talk about it.

“If it’s something that he has referred to on the subject at hand that concerns Bukit Batok, please ask me, I’d be more than happy to address it. Otherwise I really don’t want to be distracted by these things. We already have so little time.”

Separately on Monday, Tan posted on Facebook saying that Chee “disdainfully” said “we are all hobos”, a play on the Hokkien phrase for asking how someone’s day has been.

Chee said, “When he wants to make a joke as a minister and turn greetings into… you tell me what are hobos… I don’t even want to dignify this with a response.”

He asked the reporters, “Is there anything you guys want to ask me about Mr Murali and what he said? I’ll be happy to address it. I’ve heard Goh Chok Tong, I’ve heard Tan Chuan-Jin, I’ve heard Lee Hsien Loong. Is there anything else Mr Murali said?”
