Cheryl Boone Isaacs accepts final Academy presidency

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences -- which runs the film industry's annual Academy Awards -- will be led by incumbent president Cheryl Boone Isaacs for a fourth year.

President of AMPAS since 2013, in 2015 Cheryl Boone Isaacs introduced an A2020 scheme which aims to increase the diversity of the Oscar Academy's diversity.

It followed criticism of the Academy's voting preferences and membership demographic that surrounded the 89th Academy Award ceremony in February 2016.

The nominations process had failed to turn up even one candidate in the acting categories who was a person of color, despite strong performances from Idris Elba and Abraham Attah ("Beasts of No Nation,") Will Smith ("Concussion,") Benicio del Toro ("Sicario,") Jason Mitchell ("Straight Outta Compton") and others, and following recognition from other ceremonies.

Boone Isaacs was unopposed in the election, Deadline notes. Late June saw Academy send membership invitations to 683 potential new members, of whom 46% were women, 41% persons of color, and 41% were from outside the USA.
