SINGAPORE — A woman who was charged last month with murdering her two-year-old daughter in a Chin Swee Road flat in 2014 was on Tuesday (1 October) ordered to be remanded for three weeks for psychiatric observation.

The 30-year-old Singaporean cannot be named due to a court imposed gag order. She appeared at the State Courts via video-link.

Last week, the woman’s husband, a 31-year-old Singaporean, was also ordered to be remanded for three weeks for psychiatric observation. He, too, cannot be named.

The couple were first charged in court on 17 September.

The woman is currently serving a jail term of five years and two months for drug and theft offences, while the man has several drug charges and one count of rioting pending in court. She received her sentence earlier last month.

The woman’s case will be mentioned again in court on 22 October, while the man’s case will be mentioned on 15 October.

It was previously reported that human remains were found in a metal pot in the one-room rental flat following complaints of a foul smell by neighbours. Policemen responded to a call on 10 September and took away items including the pot.

If found guilty of murder, the couple face the death penalty or life imprisonment.
