On NBC's hit show This Is Us, Justin Hartley plays heartthrob Kevin Pearson. IRL, his love life is pretty much just as dramatic. Last fall, the 43-year-old actor filed for divorce from his wife, 39-year-old Selling Sunset star Chrishell Hartley — and the end of their relationship will play a big part of the Netflix reality show's third season when it premieres on August 7.

"My personal life exploded," Chrishell told InTouch Weekly about being "nervous" for Selling Sunset to return. "I am not looking forward to reliving [that]." On the flip side though, Chrishell is trying to devote her attention to what's good in her life. "Transitions are hard, but I always try to focus on the positive side of things," Chrishell told U.S. Weekly. "Thankfully, there is a lot to focus on right now."

Here's everything you need to know about the couple's six-year marriage and eventual divorce.

For both, it was their second chance at marriage: During his time on the soap opera Passions, Justin met, fell in love with, and eventually married co-star Lindsay Korman. The young couple got married on May 1, 2004 and welcomed daughter Isabella on July 3, 2004. After eight years of marriage, the couple divorced citing "irreconcilable differences." Although she never made it to the altar, Chrishell was engaged to Glee actor Matthew Morrison from 2006 through 2007.

Once they were both single and starring on soap operas — she was a regular on Days of Our Lives while he was starring on The Young and the Restless — their mutual friend encouraged them to go on a date. The pair eventually met up at a concert and ended up talking all night. At the end of the night, Chrishell "gave him the cheek and he wasn't happy about that" — but she was simply playing hard to get. "The next day I texted my friend: ‘I found him,'" Chrishell told PEOPLE. The feelings were mutual: "I drove her home and called the next day. We haven’t been apart since. I knew right away [and] was like, 'Oh boy, here we go,'" he said in the same interview.

The honeymoon phase

After nearly three years of dating, Justin proposed in July 2016. His bride-to-be announced the news on her Instagram by showing off her stunning engagement ring.

While they were preparing to say " I do", the actor couldn't stop gushing about his fiancée while doing press for the NBC show.

“It’s a special thing, isn’t it, that when you find that one person — and it sounds so cheesy. Some people are like, ‘Oh, there’s one person for everyone,'" Hartley told Harry Connick Jr. on HARRY. “But when you meet that one person, you realize like What the hell have I been doing my whole life? This is the person.”

When it came time for the wedding, the couple decided to keep things intimate with an elegant ceremony in Malibu on October 28, 2017, four years to the day that they met. Not only did Justin's daughter serve as the flower girl and ring bearer, his TV family, including Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, and Milo Ventimiglia joined in on the festivities. The happy couple described their wedding day as "magical" and "everything we wanted."

Justin filed for divorce in November 2019.

On November 22, 2019, Justin officially filed for divorce from Chrishell (though he listed the date of their separation as July 8, 2019), per Entertainment Tonight. In response, Chrishell filed for a dissolution of the marriage, citing irreconcilable differences weeks later.

It's not clear why the couple split. According to PEOPLE, a source said that Chrishell did not see the divorce coming and that it left her "reeling." "Yes, they’d had some problems, but she certainly never thought he would just go and suddenly file for divorce, and not even try to save things,” the source told the magazine.

Chrishell's Selling Sunset co-star Christine Quinn told Page Six that the couple was in therapy. "We all just thought maybe they were having communication problems for a while," Christine said."We heard that they were in therapy, so obviously there were some issues going on with them." However, Chrishell refuted these claims, tweeting:

"Let me be VERY clear. She knows absolutely nothing about the situation and is obviously desperate to gain attention by doing so. Anything from her is either a complete lie or total conjecture on her part."

We'll just have to watch Selling Sunset season 3 to find out more.
