Christian “The Warrior” Lee has been fortunate to have a host of excellent influences to draw from during his martial arts career, but perhaps the most important influence, on both his life and his career, is his older sister, “Unstoppable” Angela Lee.
The ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion is undefeated and came up through the ranks as a martial artist alongside Christian, and the pair has experienced a host of martial arts successes together.
Taught by their father, Ken, the pair captured multiple World Pankration Championships in 2012 before heading into mixed martial arts and joining ONE Championship.
Angela, two years the eldest of the pair, has ascended the ladder first, striking gold, maintaining her undefeated record and becoming a martial arts superstar.
Christian says he has been fortunately placed to be able to learn from his older sister as she has blazed a trail through Asian martial arts.
“There are so many lessons that Angela has taught me,” he says.
“She is just a great person. I could not be more proud to call her my sister.”
Lee will make his next appearance for ONE Championship at ONE: BEYOND THE HORIZON on Saturday, 8 September in Shanghai, China, where he will take on Filipino Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly in a pivotal featherweight clash for both men.
“The Warrior” says he is inspired by his sibling’s success as he looks to follow in her footsteps and become a ONE world champion.
“Watching Angela compete in her first three fights [inspired me],” he says.
“She is a great athlete and a great fighter, and it definitely helped to motivate me to step into the cage.”
Lee stepped into the ONE Championship cage for his promotional debut at ONE: SPIRIT OF CHAMPIONS in the Philippines, where he was joined on the card by Angela herself.
“We actually fought on the same card when I made my pro debut,” he remembers.
“It always helps to be there in each other’s corners.”
It proved to be a big night for the Lee family, with Christian defeating David Meak by TKO, and Angela submitting Lena Tkhorevska. The pair has been omnipresent in the other’s corner whenever they have competed since.
“Angela is an extremely strong woman,” he says.
“At 19 years old, she flew to Singapore to train at Evolve, and she stayed out there for almost a year by herself in a foreign country, training to win a world title.”
Christian soon followed her to Singapore, where he became part of the Evolve Fight Team, alongside his sister.
He was there in person to see arguably Angela’s finest hour so far in her career, when she overcame a bout of pneumonia to defeat Istela Nunes and defend her title.
Christian is determined to continue the family success when he steps back into the cage on 8 September. The Lee family has pooled its resources to help give Christian the best preparation possible, and when he steps into the ONE Championship cage to face Kelly, he will do so with his sister in his corner.
“Every day, we are in the gym,” he says.
“We are grinding together, we are training hard, and we are best friends.”
