The Civil Service Twitter account called Boris Johnson an "arrogant, offensive truth-twister" after the press conference during which he defended his chief advisor.

A tweet from the account read: "Arrogant and offensive. Can you imagine having to work with these truth-twisters?"

The statement remained up for nine minutes, during which time it received 30,000 retweets.

It is not yet clear whether the account was hacked, or whether it was posted by a disgruntled member of the civil service.

A Government spokesperson told The Telegraph they were investigating the matter, adding: "An unauthorised tweet was posted on a government channel this evening.

"The post has been removed and we are investigating the matter."

Some MPs enjoyed the spectacle, with the SNP's Martyn Day replying: "I’m sure that whoever at the UK Civil Service followed their instincts this evening will have the Prime Minister and the Cabinet's full support.

"Not all heroes wear capes."

Labour MP Rupa Huq wrote: "Now you see it, now you don’t.

Our world beating civil service’s cry for help... until it was deleted".

Another Labour MP, Wes Streeting, asked: "Perhaps the Cabinet Secretary could get around to investigating the more serious matter of Dominic Cummings?

Celebrities including Gary Lineker and JK Rowling also posted in support of the anonymous tweeter.

Many were shocked after Boris Johnson defended and praised Dominic Cummings for travelling to Durham during lockdown, despite the fact his wife had come down with coronavirus symptoms.

Mr Johnson and Mr Cummings have both faced scrutiny over the weekend as the chief advisor kept his job despite apparently breaking the rules.

Eight Conservative MPs have spoken out, asking for Mr Cummings to resign or be sacked.
