Classes suspended in the metro

(UPDATE) Classes in several parts of the National Capital Region and in nearby provinces have been canceled as Typhoon "Labuyo" intensifies.

A stronger "Labuyo" made landfall over Aurora early Monday. It was spotted 45 kilometers west of Casiguran, Aurora, with winds of 165 kilometers per hour.

The typhoon has prompted class suspensions in Metro Manila and nearby areas.

Department of Education's automatic suspension guidelines note that areas declared under Public Storm Signal Warning number 1 should automatically cancel pre-school classes. For those under Signal number 2, classes in gradeschool and high school should be automatically canceled while in areas under Signal Number 3, classes up to the tertiary level must be suspended.

In the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration's (Pagasa) 5 a.m. update Monday, public storm warning signals are up in these areas:

Signal # 3:

Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union,Pangasinan, Benguet, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and Northern Aurora

Signal # 2:

Calayan and Babuyan Group of Islands, Zambales, Tarlac, rest of Aurora and Nueva Ecija

Signal # 1:

Batanes, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Northern Quezon including Polillo Island, Laguna, Cavite, and Metro Manila
