ALOR STAR: Clearing work resumed this morning at the site of the Haraki Expo bazaar, next to the Kedah Pas Complex, Kota Sarang Semut here, which was devastated by a powerful storm last night.
Located next to the main hall where Pas’ 63rd Muktamar is being held, the remains of the bazaar have been cordoned off to the public as a safety precaution.
However, several traders were seen attempting to salvage goods from their damaged booths today.
Pas secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said clean-up work is taking place to enable the site to be used for other activities during the three-day Muktamar, which ends tomorrow.
Sudden, strong winds struck the outdoor bazaar at 7.25pm last night, blowing down the main roof, causing the collapse of several canopies and damaging 20 trading booths.
Eighteen traders and patrons were reported injured, two of whom suffered broken legs.
All victims were rushed to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for treatment.
Pas has decided to cancel a fundraising dinner, scheduled to be held at the complex this evening, in light of the mishap.
