"Cold War" ousts "Skyfall" from top

17 Nov – The Sunny Luk and Longman Leung-helmed action thriller "Cold War" has recently broke box office records in China and Hong Kong.

According to Asianpopnews, the movie starring Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Kar-fai has taken the top spot in the Hong Kong box office in its premiere week, beating even the Bond film "Skyfall" by taking in HKD 2.01 million (app. USD 259,000) in its first day.

Touted as Hong Kong's best crime thriller and a new hope for Hong Kong films, "Cold War" also stars new generation actors Aarif Lee and Eddie Peng. Despite criticisms that it bears a similar theme of police versus robbers as that of "Infernal Affairs" (2002), critics such as Taiwanese writer Giddens Ko stated that the film is still brilliant and intense, as well as having injected a new element and refreshing message to the audiences.

Meanwhile, various film directors, including Li Shaohong, Gu Changwei and Manfred Wong, have also strongly recommended the film, while Andy Lau, who plays a cameo in the movie, was full of praises about the production.

The movie has already garnered the attention of internationals when it was shown at the 17th Busan International Film Festival.
