KUALA LUMPUR: DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang should explain the party and Pas' agreement on Islam during the 13th General Elections, said Umno Supreme Council member and Kuala Selangor MP Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim.
Irmohizam, in describing the opposition's struggle as sheer hypocrisy, said DAP had previously tried their earnest to persuade Chinese voters that all matters related to Islam such as the 'hudud' agenda had nothing to do with them.
"Unfortunately, today they are seen to be more aggressive in opposing the proposed Private Member's Bill 355 (RUU 355) which was brought by Pas president (Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang).
"What is more disappointing is that Lim tried to exploit RUU 355 which does not affect non-Muslims, by trying to intimidate them and misled the public," he said in a statement today.
He advised Lim to welcome RUU 355 with an open heart and show that he understands and respects Muslims.
Irmohizam also reminded that non-Muslims should not be unduly worried by RUU 355 as it is not applicable to them, and he slammed the opposition for making a fuss out of it.
He said the purpose of the bill is to upgrade the punishment meted out in syariah courts where any religious offense would only involve Muslims.
"What the opposition is doing will only confuse the voters." he said.
