Singer Grimes and her partner, SpaceX founder and billionaire Elon Musk, recently welcomed their first child together, a baby boy named X Æ A-12.

After we spent quite a long time trawling the internet trying to work out how exactly you pronounce X Æ A-12, we decided to take a look back at the infamous couple's relationship over the years, starting with the most recent update.

December 2021

It's been a few months since Grimes and Elon called it quits on their three year relationship, but that doesn't mean the drama between the pair is over. In fact, fans think Grimes just threw some major shade at her ex in her new track: "Player of Games."

In the song, the 33-year-old sings about a lover who, you guessed it, loves playing games. "I’m in love with the greatest gamer, but he’ll always love the game more than he loves me," Grimes sings, which fans suspect is a not-so-subtle hint at Elon – who has been a lover of video games since the age of 12, when he designed his first one. On multiple occasions, he's even implied that his billionaire status is all thanks to his passion for video games, telling the crowd at 2019's E3 Expo: "Part of the reason, maybe the reason, I got interested in tech was video games. I probably wouldn’t have started programming if it wasn’t for video games."

It makes sense then, why Grimes' fans think she's singing about her ex. But, the similarities don't stop there, as she then goes on to sing about her lover heading off to space. "Sail away to the cold expanse of space, even love couldn’t keep you in your place," the Canadian sings, clearly hinting at the SpaceX founder's keen interest in space exploration.

We're convinced.

Here's the rest of Grimes and Elon's relationship timeline...

May 2018

It all starts at the 2018 Met Gala where the pair appeared for the first time as a couple in their infamous black and white outfits. People were quick to express their surprise at the unexpected couple, who had been rumoured to be dating earlier than month after apparently flirting up a storm on Twitter over a joke about Roko’s Basilisk - a thought experiment surrounding AI. Sure, okay.

August 2018

In a really odd turn on events Azealia Banks speaks to Business Insider about spending the day with the couple at Musk's house. Speaking to BI on Instagram DMs, Banks said, "They bring me out there on the premise that we would hang and make music. But his dumbass kept tweeting and tucked his d*ck in between his ass cheeks once sh*t hit the fan."

Supposedly, Banks claimed that Musk was trying to get people to invest in Tesla, after tweeting earlier that he planned to take the brand private, but that funding had already been secured.

"I saw him in the kitchen tucking his tail in between his legs scrounging for investors to cover his ass after that tweet," she said. "He was stressed and red in the face."

August 2018

Later than month, after the weird Azealia Banks debacle, rumours start spreading that the couple are on the rocks, after they unfollow each other on Twitter.

October 2018

The couple re-appear for the first time in months to visit a pumpkin patch in Los Angeles together, along with Elon's twins, Griffin and Xavier and his triplets, Kai, Saxon and Damian. The outing must have gone well because the Elon later re-followed Grimes on Twitter. Because nothing brings people together like pumpkins...?

December 2019

We don't hear from the Grusks (does that... does that work?) for a while, but eventually in December 2019 the pair crop up in a picture posted to Kim Kardashian's Instagram showing them as guests at one of her famous Christmas Eve parties. In celebrity couple terms, this is quite a big deal.

January 2020

Grimes announced her pregnancy on Instagram with a topless picture edited to show an embryo inside her. She ended up having to post the image again with her nipples edited out because on Instagrams strict policy on female nipples, which still somehow exists.

March 2020

Grimes confirms that Musk is the father of her child in an interview with Rolling Stone. She and her baby bump also graced the cover that month, and she looked undeniably incredible.

Grimes and Elon welcome little baby boy, X Æ A-12, and I imagine, have a really hilarious time watching us all scrambling around for answers on how to pronounce it. X Æ A-12 is the couple's first child together. Musk has five sons from a previous marriage, while Grimes sadly lost her first son, Nevada, to SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) when he was just 10 weeks old. The couple seem over the moon with the new addition to their family, with Musk responding to a fan tweet saying that the baby is, "Happy, healthy & cute as a button :)".

A week later Grimes shares a cute video of Elon cuddling 1-week old son, X Æ A-12, on her Instagram stories, along with two little pink heart emojis. It's all very sweet.

9th March 2021

Grimes, Elon and X Æ A-12 are a pretty private family, and aside from being absolutely taken down by Twitter back in December last year for disparaging comments Musk made about personal pronouns (people were quick to remind "you named your kid a wifi password"), we've not heard a lot from them in a while. Which must be why Musk has decided to share a rare picture of the whole family on Twitter, taken in Starbase, Texas - where Musk is reportedly planning to build a new city. Obviously.
