BENTONG: A container lorry driver and his assistant escaped unhurt when their vehicle burst into flames at Km53 of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway near here, yesterday.
The Scania lorry, laden with recycled paper, was heading towards Bentong when the incident happened at around 2pm.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said when firemen reached the scene, the lorry was parked on the shoulder of the road, and around 90 per cent of the vehicle had been destroyed.
He said 10 firemen from the district station, along with six volunteer firemen, took almost an hour to completely douse the fire.
"Due to the huge flames, we had to stop traffic in both directions and bring the fire under control with water and foam.
"The incident resulted in a minor traffic crawl," he said, adding that both the driver and his assistant managed to flee the lorry before it was completely engulfed in flames.
