Manchester United are considering sending Mason Greenwood out on loan for the whole of next season, according to reports.

In February, charges including attempted rape and assault against Greenwood were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

This decision was made after they ruled “there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” following “a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses” and “new evidence.”

Man Utd subsequently began their own internal investigation into the situation. Greenwood has also been suspended by the club since January 2022. Now, the internal investigation is nearing completion.

As a result, Erik ten Hag will have to decide what to do with Greenwood next season. The manager has previously called him a ‘capable goal scorer,’ but, it would be a controversial move to throw him straight back into the first team.

However, there is no shortage of interest in Greenwood, despite his ongoing situation.

According to the Daily MailMan Utd could send Greenwood out on loan next season.

The report states that club officials are looking into a move that would ‘see him head abroad for up to a year.’

Italy, Spain and Turkey are believed to be the three likeliest options. For example, Juventus have previously registered an interest in signing Greenwood.

The Daily Mail add that a loan would ‘allow Man Utd to gauge public reaction’ to Greenwood playing again. Also, the club are ‘wary of the views of the dressing rooms of both their men’s and women’s teams.’

As mentioned, the former England international has been suspended since January last year. Before that, he had made 129 appearances for Man Utd, scoring 35 goals in the process.

Clearly, Greenwood has the potential to become a top player. But, the optics of a return to playing for Man Utd may be very damaging to the club’s image.

Interestingly, it’s believed the Glazer family will have the final say on whether or not Greenwood returns to the team, in consultation with chief executive Richard Arnold.

While the internal investigation does not have a concrete end date, it is expected to be completed before the takeover of Man Utd is completed.

As it stands, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is leading Shiekh Jassim in the race to buy the club. If Ratcliffe is successful, the Glazers are expected to maintain some influence within Man Utd.
