PUTRAJAYA: Police are looking for a man, believed to have abandoned a newborn child at a surau in Presint 9, here last night.

Putrajaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Rosly Hassan said investigators were still working to identify the suspect after the surau's closed circuit television cameras showed a man placing a bag at the back of the building.

He said a body of a baby girl, with her umbilical cord still attached, was found stuffed in a bag at the compound of Surau Abu Bakar As-Siddiq at 8.30pm, last night.

"The baby was wrapped in a piece of newspaper and a blue towel imprinted with a name of a hotel in Port Dickson.

"There was also a note left asking the committee members of the surau to carry out the necessary funeral rites on the baby," said Rosly in a WhatsApp message today.

The note read: "Kepada orang-orang surau, tolong mandi dan kafankan bayi ini. Saya tak ada sesiapa nak minta tolong. Harap pertolongan ini dapat dibantu. Terima kasih. Pertolongan dapat dihargai. Cuma Allah saja dapat balas jasa-jasa orang surau." (To all surau congregation, please bathe and wrap the baby in 'kafan' cloth. I have nobody else to ask for help. I hope you can assist. Thank you. Your assistance is much appreciated. Only Allah can repay your kindness.)

The body had been sent to Putrajaya Hospital for a post-mortem.

The case was being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing the birth by secret disposal of a dead body.
