Coronavirus cases rose to 226 in Singapore by Monday morning after nearly 40 infections were reported since Friday night, of which 27 had involved people who likely contracted COVID-19 outside of the city-state.
Nine of the 14 cases reported on Sunday involved people who took ill soon after visiting places like Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as parts of Europe.
Two Singaporeans who were recently in Indonesia, a French expat who was in France, Spain, and the Philippines throughout last week, and a Spanish expat who arrived from Spain on Friday were among the cases reported last night.
Other foreign nationals reported prior to those cases include those from New Zealand, the United States, Malaysia, India, and the Philippines.
The surge in imported infections prompted Singapore to announce further travel restrictions yesterday. By midnight, all travelers arriving from any ASEAN country, Japan, Switzerland or the United Kingdom will be ordered to self-quarantine for 14 days.
This is on top of the current ban on tourist arrivals for mainland China, Iran, Italy, France, Germany, South Korea, and Spain.
Singapore also advised citizens yesterday to defer all non-essential travels immediately for the next 30 days.
Separately, the cluster of infections linked to the Feb. 15 private dinner in Jurong has risen to nearly 50 and three more Singaporeans who attended a mass Islamic religious gathering in Malaysia have tested positive. All Singapore mosques remain closed for disinfection until tomorrow.
Other infected Singaporeans announced over the weekend who are not linked to the Jurong dinner or the mosque gathering include a psychologist for the Singapore General Hospital, who was in the United States from March 2 to 7, and a medical social worker from the same hospital.
As of Monday morning, a total of 13 people are in critical condition and 105 have been discharged from hospitals. Find all of Singapore’s cases on the map below. For more COVID-19 coverage, visit Coconuts Singapore’s Health page.
