Coronavirus: New York reports 779 deaths — most in one day

Here’s a recap of the global response to the coronavirus pandemic for Wednesday, April 8, 2020.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that there were 779 new coronavirus deaths since Tuesday — the most in a single day. New York State now has more reported coronavirus cases than any country.

The United States remained the epicenter of the pandemic, with over 430,000 cases. More than 14,000 people have died, and multiple cities are reporting that the virus is disproportionally killing black Americans.

Over 1.4 million people worldwide have now tested positive for the coronavirus and more than 89,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
