Anyone returning to Beijing from a holiday must enter a 14-day period of quarantine, or face punishment, authorities in the Chinese have said.

The measure is designed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus that has so far killed nearly 1,400 people and infected some 65,000, mostly in mainland China.

But it was not immediately clear how the stricture would be enforced, or whether it applied to foreigners and people not normally resident in Beijing.

It was announced in the state-run Beijing Daily newspaper.
