Lingerie, while very pretty and awesome to own, can be a little daunting. Between the high prices and delicate fabrics, it’s enough to make any girl freak out and just buy some plain two-for-one cotton undies instead. Don’t even get us started on knowing what our actual bra size is. (What? Adulting can be hard!)

But nevertheless, lingerie can feel sexy and empowering to wear, and there is truly nothing better than walking into a room knowing that no matter what happens today, you have cute underwear on. So we often cave and invest anyway.

But if you have no clue on how to care for your lingerie — or if you’re considering whether it’s worth it to buy some — have no fear! We’ve come across this handy guide that Allison Beale, Marketing and Brand Director of the lingerie brand Journelle, advised on for Bustle. The guide is totally easy, not scary, and chock full of all sorts of underwear facts we did not know about. So, here is how you actually take care of your lingerie:

1. Do not wash your bras after every wear.

As counterintuitive as it feels, you really don’t need to wash your bras after every time you wear them. This guide recommends that you wash them after every seven wears, rotating different bras in between wears. This is because washing can actually break down the structure and material in your bras faster. And the great news is that if you have at least a couple bras in your wardrobe, you get roughly a month or two before you need to worry about washing your bras. Laundry-phobes, rejoice!

2. Handwash your lingerie.

Apparently, you shouldn’t be putting your bras and lingerie through the wash cycle. You need to hand wash them to protect the delicate fabrics. While this might sound overly labor-intensive and fussy, it’s actually not that big of a deal. All you need to do is fill a basin (or sink if you’re like me and don’t have a basin) with lukewarm water and a cap of lingerie wash, and just swirl your underwear around a few times. When you’re finished, just wring them out and let them dry flat.

3. Never machine-dry.

If you get into a pinch or really don’t feel like hand-washing your lingerie (sort of can’t blame you, but I digress), the guide says that you should never put your lingerie in the dryer. The wash cycle is okay (but not great) if you feel like you have to use a washing machine, but let the lingerie air dry as opposed to sticking it in the dryer to protect your delicates from damage.

4. Spoon your bras when you store them.

This is kind of a weird term, but by “spoon,” we mean when you store your bras, stack your cups so that they’re “spooned” into each other. This will help them keep their shape, and bonus, will totally save space in your underwear drawer!

5. Hang your lingerie.

This is for the super fancy lingerie enthusiasts, but if you have space and time for this, the guide recommends hanging your more delicate pieces of lingerie. The reasoning for this is again to keep the shape and avoid twisting any lace or silk pieces to prevent tear and breakage.

And there you have it! All the care instructions for lingerie that you never knew you needed to know. The great news is they all seem like pretty simple fixes that will save your clothes and your money in the long run. So happy, lingerie wearing — and washing!
