Couple hurt in Merchang MPV crash die, 10 others in stable condition

KUALA TERENGGANU: A couple who was severely injured in a crash involving two multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) near Merchang, Marang on Saturday, died while receiving treatment in hospital yesterday.

The husband and wife were identified as Noor Amalina Noorzan, 34 and Badrulhisham Omar, 41, who were both teachers in Kemaman.

They and their four young children were among 13 victims of the crash at Km 41 of Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Merchang, which occurred at around 6.25 pm.

Three of the children – Darwish, 4, Diyani, 7 and Danish, 11, suffered head and abdominal injuries – while the fourth, Damia, 9, sustained light injuries.

All are being warded at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital.

According to State Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Superintendent Abd Razak Hassan, Noor Amalina and Badrulhisham died within hours of each other.

"The wife died at 12.35am, while her husband passed away at 6.16am," he said.

In the accident on Saturday, the family was traveling to Kuantan from Kuala Terengganu in a Toyota Wish, which was being driven by Noor Amalina.

Amalina's MPV suddenly veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a Hyundai MPV.

Six of the seven Hyundai passengers were also badly injured in the crash and are being treated at the same hospital.

They have been identified as driver Zulkahar Ismail, 52, Munira Nordin, 49, Intan Zubati Zulkahar, 21, Ierman Putra Zulkahar, 20, Ierman Rifqi Idraki Zulkahar, 7, Nur Farisha Haida Md Fadzil, 20 and Muhammad Najhan Zainuddin, 21.

"The accident is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road and Transport Act 1987," added Abd Razak.
