(UPDATE) Sisters left orphaned as lorry crash in Sungai Bakap kills parents


SUNGAI BAKAP: A horrific crash at Km154.9 on the North-South Highway here today claimed the lives of a husband and wife.

In the 5pm incident, the couple, who was travelling in a lorry with two of their children, died when their vehicle crashed into the back of a five-tonne lorry.

Road users who witnessed the incident immediately alerted authorities.

A team of 24 firemen from the Sungai Bakap Fire and Rescue Department, headed by operations commander, Mohd Rosmaidi Baharuddin, was promptly dispatched to the scene.

The team managed to retrieve the bodies of the victims, both in their 30s, from the wreck. The couple were however pronounced dead on the spot and their remains were then sent to the Penang Hospital for a post-mortem.

It was understood that the couple’s eight-year-old daughter sustained severe bodily injuries while their other four-year-old child escaped with minor injuries. The other lorry driver also sustained minor injuries.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
