SINGAPORE — The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) has advised congregants who have recently attended 10 mosques here to monitor their health for 14 days from their last visit and to seek prompt medical attention if they feel unwell.

“These congregants are advised to monitor their health closely for two weeks from their last visit to the affected mosques, for any fever or respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, runny nose or breathlessness) and seek medical attention promptly if they have these symptoms or feel unwell,” said Muis, said the council in a news release on Sunday (15 March).

“They should also wear a mask and call the clinic ahead of the visit and inform the clinic doctor of their attendance at the affected activities that is linked to a COVID-19 case,” it added.

The move comes after a number of individuals infected with COVID-19 were found to have visited the mosques during their infectious period between 3 March and 11 March.

Muis also advised congregants to avoid large community gatherings and large religious gatherings overseas for this period and to defer all non-essential travel to mainland China, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Spain.

It also encouraged the maintenance of socially responsible behaviour through actions such as practising self-isolation when unwell and keeping to the same family physician for better continuity of care.

As of Friday, five Singaporeans who attended a large religious gathering in Kuala Lumpur held from 27 February to 1 March have tested positive for the coronavirus. Muis said that, based on media reports, at least 37 Brunei citizens and 77 Malaysians who were at the gathering, or were close contacts of the attendees, have also tested positive.

At a multi-ministry task force press conference on Friday, a senior MOH official said that at least 79 of around 90 Singaporeans who attended a religious gathering in Malaysia have been contacted and will be placed on a 14-day home quarantine and monitored during the duration.
