Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged by the Football Association after footage emerged of him knocking a phone out of a fan’s hand.

The Manchester United forward was cautioned by the police after the incident following the defeat at Goodison Park in April. United have insisted they will support the 37-year-old’s response to the charge.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 for an incident that took place after Manchester United FC's Premier League match against Everton FC on Saturday 9 April 2022. It is alleged that the forward's conduct after the final whistle was improper and/or violent,” read a statement from the FA.

“We note the FA announcement in relation to Cristiano Ronaldo,” added United. “We will be supporting the player in his response to the charge."

The incident five months ago was posted on social medical and Merseyside Police confirmed Ronaldo was interviewed under caution in relation to an allegation of assault and criminal damage.

Ronaldo voluntarily attended a police interview and issued a social media apology for his “outburst”, inviting the young fan involved to watch a game at Old Trafford. The matter was considered concluded by the police but the FA also launched an investigation.

“It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing,” he posted to his 482 million followers on the social media platform. “Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.

“I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship.”
