PAPAR: Anglers were caught by surprise recently when a crocodile suddenly appeared and grabbed the bait from a fishing rod at a private lake in Kampung Binukut, Kimanis here.

The incident on March 5, took place during a fishing competition when one of the contestants accidentally caught the reptile. It however escaped after the fishing line broke.

Fearing for the participants' safety, the lake owner informed the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD). The following day, the department’s Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) set up a crocodile trap in the lake and used a chicken carcass as bait.

At 7am today, the team was informed that the 2.4 metre-long saltwater crocodile took the bait and was captured.

SWD assistant director Dr Sen Nathan, who is also the head of WRU, believed flood could have brought the reptile into the lake.

“It is a male crocodile. The crocodile is under our care at the moment and we will identify a suitable location for its release. It will be released in a location away from human settlement,” he said.

It was learnt that WRU rangers took the crocodile to the Wildlife Holding Area and Rescue Centre.
