Sidney Crosby will captain Canada in the World Cup of Hockey

Sidney Crosby will captain Canada at the upcoming World Cup of Hockey, it was confirmed Thursday. Hockey Canada said in a statement the 29-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins ace would be backed by Chicago forward Jonathan Toews and Montreal's Shea Weber as alternates. "These are three leaders who have demonstrated their ability to win at all levels, and we are looking to them to bring that experience, and their relentless pursuit of excellence, as we come together as a team," Canada manager Doug Armstrong said. Crosby skippered Canada to the gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. He also led Canada to victory in the world hockey championships last year. The star forward has has 338 goals and 938 points in 707 career NHL games. Eight teams are taking part in the World Cup of Hockey. Joining Canada in the September 17-October 1 event are the United States, Czech Republic, Europe, Finland, North America, Russia and Sweden.
