Jonathan Pryce has been cast as the next actor to play Prince Philip in The Crown.

The 73-year-old star, who earned an Oscar nod earlier this year for his role in The Two Popes, will play the Queen’s husband in the fifth and sixth seasons of the Netflix hit.

Pryce will be dethroning his Game of Thrones co-star Tobias Menzies, who played the contentious figure in season three and four.

Matt Smith starred as the prince in the first two series of the show.

Joining Pryce in the forthcoming series are Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II (currently played by Olivia Colman) and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret (taking over from Helena Bonham Carter).

Seasons five and six will be set in the early 2000s. Season four is expected to launch later this year, and cover the Margaret Thatcher era, as well as Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s tumultuous marriage.
