When she signed up to play Princess Diana in series 4 of The Crown, Emma Corrin agreed to get to know the late royal inside out. After spending months researching the Princess of Wales, immersing herself in the woman she was and then playing her on screen, Corrin is perhaps quite well placed to share her thoughts on Diana, and the similarities she sees between her and her daughter-in-law, Meghan Markle.

In a new interview with Town and Country, Corrin explained why she believes there is a sad comparison to be drawn between the way Meghan and Diana have been treated by the media. Both have famously been hounded negatively by the press, and Meghan Markle has made a point of speaking out in objection to her mistreatment. "When people are saying things that are just untrue, and they're being told they're untrue but they're allowed to still say them, I don't know anybody in the world that would feel like that's okay," the Duchess of Sussex said in a 2019 interview. "I thought that it would be fair. And that's the part that's really hard to reconcile."

Echoing this point, Emma Corrin said: "You just want to shake these tabloids and say, can’t you see history repeating itself?"

The actress also felt there was a similarity in both women's expectations of joining the royal family. Touching on the difficulty both Diana and Meghan had transitioning into the new way of life that came with marrying into royalty, Corrin said: "The coldness, the traditions, and the expectations of behaviour… I don’t think [Diana] expected that. I think she expected to join a family."

Emma Corrin isn't the only one to have drawn a comparison between Meghan Markle and Princess Diana's experiences. In a letter shared on the Sussexes' former website in October 2019, Prince Harry explained the couple were suing a British newspaper for waging a "ruthless campaign" against Meghan "with no thought to the consequences."

As we know all too sadly, Princess Diana was killed in a car crash while trying to shake off paparazzi in Paris. Revealing his deep-seated concern that things might play out similarly as tragically with his wife, Prince Harry wrote in his letter: "My deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces."
