Banned garlic importers
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) has prohibited 50 importers from operating.
Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said this came from the list of the Department of Justice following the investigation of the Senate on the existence of garlic cartel in the country.
Prior to this, DA has blacklisted 37 companies for failing to import garlic despite securing import clearance.
The Secretary said the non-importation of the garlic resulted into the soaring prices of garlic last month.
The Philippine Competition Commission is now studying the cases to be filed against those proven to be involved in garlic cartel.
“We have to ban them pending the results of the DOJ investigation on the filling of cases. Once they are exonerated, we will also lift the ban,” Piñol said. – UNTV News & Rescue
