Dakota Crescent redevelopment: Iconic playground to be retained, repurposed
In a bid to provide more public housing options near the city, Dakota Crescent will be redeveloped into a public housing site with the central cluster of buildings around the courtyard to be retained and repurposed, reported Channel News Asia.
Developed in 1958 by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) as a public rental housing estate, Dakota Crescent comprises 15 low-rise blocks.
“We recognise the significance of the estate – as MP Lim Biow Chuan highlighted in Parliament last year, this was one of Singapore’s first public housing projects, built before the formation of HDB in 1960. So we intend to retain the central cluster of buildings around the courtyard area (including the Dove Playground), and re-purpose them for civic and community uses,” said National Development Minister Lawrence Wong.
He noted that the refreshed Dakota Crescent could be an interesting mixed-use area, featuring new HDB flats, convenient amenities, adaptive re-use of some of the old buildings and vibrant community spaces.
Wong revealed that his ministry will continue to engage stakeholders as well as involve the wider community in redeveloping the area.
