Cowboys, Trevon Diggs keep streaks alive in dominant win over injury-plagued Giants

Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys just keep on rolling.

The Cowboys picked up their fourth straight win on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium with a convincing 44-20 victory over the New York Giants. Diggs grabbed his sixth interception of the season during the contest, and now has one in all five games on the year — matching a franchise record.

Trevon Diggs’ interception streak continues

Diggs expertly grabbed his sixth interception of the season on Sunday afternoon in their matchup with the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium, sliding in front of C.J. Board to break up the deep pass from backup quarterback Mike Glennon.

Diggs now has an interception in all five games so far this season, and has instantly made himself a Defensive Player of the Year frontrunner.

He made two interceptions in Dallas’ win last week against Sam Darnold and the Carolina Panthers, and has now tied Dan Bishop as the only other player in Cowboys history with an interception in the team’s first five games of the season.

Diggs, who the Cowboys took No. 51 overall in the 2020 NFL draft, only had four interceptions throughout his career at Alabama. He now leads the league.

Cowboys cruise as Giants starters fall early

The Cowboys didn’t surge ahead until the second half, when both New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Daniel Jones had already been carted off the field.

Barkley rolled his ankle in the first quarter after stepping on Cowboys linebacker Jourdan Lewis’ foot. His ankle swelled up fast, and he had to be carted off to the locker room.

Jones then went down late in the first half when trying to run the ball into the end zone. Jones took a tough shot to the helmet, and stumbled a bit on the field before he too was carted back to the locker rooms. He was ruled out with a concussion — which paved the way for Mike Glennon to enter the game.

The Cowboys took a seven-point lead at the break after Dak Prescott connected with CeeDee Lamb for a 49-yard score early in the second quarter and then again with Amari Cooper for a 24-yard touchdown.

Ezekiel Elliott scored twice in the second half, once on a four-yard reception in the third and then on a 13-yard run early in the fourth quarter to cap a 98-yard drive and give Dallas a 21-point lead.

Fight breaks out late

Frustrations seemed to boil over for the Giants late in the fourth quarter, and Giants receiver Kadarius Toney was ejected after throwing a punch at Cowboys safety Damontae Kazee during a scuffle.

Toney, after making a great move to get a first down, threw a punch right at Kazee’s helmet after a bit of shoving broke out on the field.

He was ejected, ending what was an otherwise stellar performance for the X-year-old. Toney had 189 receiving yards on 10 receptions when he was ejected, both career-highs for the rookie out of Florida.

The Giants did score once more before the day was over, thanks to a diving play from Devontae Booker on fourth down. Yet after a failed onside kick attempt, the Cowboys kicked one final field goal and then Anthony Brown ran back an interception for a touchdown to seal the 24-point win.

Glennon finished the day with 196 yards and two touchdowns. Devontae Booker led the Giants on the ground with 42 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

Prescott finished 22-of-32 through the air for 302 yards and three touchdowns in the win, and Elliott had 110 rushing yards and two total touchdowns on 21 carries. Lamb led the Cowboys with 84 receiving yards, and tight end Dalton Schultz had 79 receiving yards on six receptions.
