David Beckham Coming to the Blockchain as Sorare Inks Deal With Top French Club PSG

Blockchain-enabled fantasy soccer game Sorare has inked a licensing deal with leading French team Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), allowing it to tokenize the club’s past and present soccer players such as David Beckham, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

Announced on Tuesday, Sorare also said it is launching its platform out of beta for users in the United States. According to a press statement emailed to CoinDesk, the U.S. is Sorare’s second largest market by user base. The platform’s official roll out in the country follows a licensing deal with the MLS Players Association signed earlier this year in June.

  • Sorare uses the Ethereum blockchain to mint digital trading cards representing professional soccer players. The digital cards can be collected, traded by users and also be used to participate in the platform’s weekly league competitions.

  • Users also have the option to buy tokens for other players to improve their team and – depending on how the soccer players perform in real life – they may receive rewards in more trading cards or ETH.

  • Under the licensing deal signed with soccer club PSG, Sorare will also be granted the rights to tokenize some of the club’s “legendary” players from 2013 including David Beckham.

  • According to the emailed statement, Sorare’s full rollout in the U.S. “comes in response to the significant user demand from the market,” and could help the platform acquire more licensing deals with soccer teams in the country.

  • While the platform has clocked an overall reach of about 40,000 users worldwide since launching in March last year, its monthly active users (MAU) stood at 5,891 last month, according to data shared by Sorare.
