David Tennant to return to 'Broadchurch'

The actor will be on the cast of the British crime drama's second season, which will be filmed before the end of the year.

Until now, David Tennant's participation in the next season of "Broadchurch" was up in the air, largely because of the involvement and therefore time commitment of the actor in the American remake of the series, "Gracepoint," which is currently being filmed in Canada for FOX.

But in an interview with UK website Cultbox, Tennant's "Broadchurch" co-star Jodie Whittaker confirmed that David Tennant would indeed return in the role of Detective Inspector Alec Hardy. The actress also stated that Olivia Colman would be back to play Hardy's colleague, Ellie Miller.

This means that the former "Doctor Who" star will now headline both the English and American versions of the series, both of which will focus on how the murder of a young boy turns life upside down for the inhabitants of a small town. In the FOX remake, Tennant will be joined on the set by "Breaking Bad" star Anna Gunn.

The first season of "Broadchurch," consisting of eight episodes, was aired on ITV in the UK in March and April 2013. The show proved to be a hit with British audiences, and its season finale attracted 6.93 million viewers.
