The new Broadchurch might be a whodunnit of sorts, but the ITV thriller is moving away from the murder mystery angle that drove its first two series.

David Tennant – back as irascible Alec Hardy – told press including Digital Spy that having his character investigate another killing with Olivia Colman's Miller wouldn't feel truthful.

Instead, the odd-couple coppers will be investing a sexual assault case, with Broadchurch resident Trish Winterman (Julie Hesmondhalgh) having been attacked.

"Chris [Chibnall, series writer] has told us that that was the intention quite a long way back," Tennant revealed. "It couldn't be another body on another beach, that wouldn't have the truthfulness that I think you've come to expect from this series.

"So beyond that, you just kind of travel in trust that Chris is going to produce something that is sensitive and appropriate, and also a stonking piece of drama. It's a different type of story, but it's the same world."

The first series of Broadchurch aired in 2013 on ITV and told the story of a young boy murdered – killed, as it turned out, by Miller's husband Joe (Matthew Gravelle).

The second series went out in 2015 and delved into an old case of Hardy's, but Tennant has insisted that the latest investigation won't be of such a personal nature.

"What's interesting from Olivia and I's point of view is suddenly we're just two coppers doing a job," he explained. "We're starting from the outside working in, whereas before, in series one and two, there's a much more immediate personal connection for the characters."

Series creator Chibnall has insisted that the third series of Broadchurch will be the last, with the writer set to replace Steven Moffat as showrunner on Doctor Who from 2018.

Broadchurch will return to ITV later this month.
