A Day Out At Hong Kong Island

Peyton Guan | TripTipping

Seldom is a city such a lesson in contrasts as Hong Kong. On the one hand, the city is decidedly modern, with its skyscrapers and contemporary fashion. On the other hand, it is steeped in tradition. Luckily, there is something for everyone in Hong Kong. This guide will help you find something to do even if you visit for one day.

Breakfast

Tsui Wah Restaurant

When in Hong Kong, you must try breakfast at a tea restaurant. Tsui Wah, the city’s most prestigious tea restaurant with branches spreading over Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, can offer you a typical and quality local morning taste. Good choices are like butter bun (one of the recommended speciality of the restaurant), satay beef with instant noodles in soup and of course, milk tea.

Address: 15-19 Wellington Street, G/F-2/F Central, Hong Kong

Morning Activity

Hollywood Road

Featuring many antique shops along both sides, the street, widely known as “the antique street”, is one of the oldest streets in Hong Kong which runs between Central and Sheung Wan. It used to be a popular spot for tourists and antique lovers from all over the world, but it has become less clamorous and many antique shops have been replaced by cafes and restaurants in this modern era.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an antique enthusiast or not, you should pay a visit as there are many traditional antique shops where you can find really interesting items like black-and-white photos from 1900s and beautiful jeweleries.

It’s a long street and it takes some time to visit all different stores. Take your time and rest at a café on the street. This one called Classified is a cosy and comfortable choice.

Lunch

Kau Kee Restaurant

This is probably one of the city’s most famous noodle restaurants which only serves beef brisket noodle in clear soup or in curry flavor. Small as it is, the restaurant is always packed with regulars or visitors. The price is a little expensive than other noodle restaurants but the taste is really the best among those I’ve tried so far.

Afternoon Activity

Take a tram and let it take you through all the skyscrapers in Central and Wanchai. It is a really special experience to sit in such a traditional and old public transportation while looking at those modern tall buildings. I prefer seats on the second floor.

Hysan Place mall, Causeway Bay

If you want to avoid the crowds at shopping venues like Times Square or Sogo in Causeway Bay, go to this newly-opened mall. Shopping is a fabulous experience at the place as the interior is modernly designed with light colors and dazzling aesthetics. Luxury lovers can visit the T Galeria which offers the finest luxury brands.

You definitely want to pay a visit to the famous Taiwanese Eslite Bookstore which just opened this summer. It’s the first overseas branch of this renowned bookstore. No other place is better than this three-storey bookstore, which also has an exquisite café inside, for you to get away from the city’s clamour.

Dinner

Amaroni’s Little Italy

A popular Italian restaurant in the city. Has a family atmosphere and carefully-prepared food. Lasagne and Pizza Classic are highly recommended. Tiramisu is a must try!

Situated on the very top of a tall building called Cubus in Causeway Bay, this bar is an awesome place for a post-dinner delight. It has fancy and elegant décor with full-length windows that allow you a full-scale view from 27th floor to the ground. Not a bad choice for sightseeing at night.

But the drinks are even more fabulous. I tried one called Fancy Cider, one of the bar’s selected cocktails, and fell instantly in love with the taste. Other recommendations are like Acid Rain and Clover Leaf.
