SINGAPORE — A Singaporean couple were charged on Tuesday (17 September) with murdering their own child more than five years ago, following the discovery of the victim’s charred remains last week.

The 31-year-old man and 30-year-old woman are believed to have killed their two-and-a-half-year-old biological daughter at their Chin Swee Road flat in March 2014. They cannot be named in order to protect the victim’s identity.

Both parties made a brief appearance at the State Courts to hear the charge read against them. They have been held in remand since June last year for other offences, including unlawful assembly and drug consumption.

Chinese media, citing reliable sources, had earlier reported that the unidentified body of a child was found burnt in a pot in an HDB unit at Block 52 Chin Swee Road on 10 September.

Police had responded to a call for assistance at the unit at around 8.30pm. Officers then discovered the remains of a toddler inside the unit.

The couple will next appear in court on 24 September.
