Decoding the Duchess of Cambridge's casual autumn style formula

We all have a particular outfit in our wardrobe that we return to on an almost weekly basis. The exact items of clothing may change, but the silhouette and even the colour combinations rarely do - mostly because it makes us look good and feel (that peak 2020 word) comfortable.

The Duchess of Cambridge is no different. Her staple outfit was shown off in all its country-girl glory during today’s visit to the London Scouts Group in Northolt. Wearing a pair of belted ultra-skinny jeans by Massimo Dutti with See by Chloe boots, she navigated the changeable autumnal weather with a Nubuck Waistcoat by Really Wild - a brand we have seen her in before during a trip to Bhutan in 2016. Underneath it was a blue cotton Massimo Dutti  shirt, accessorised with earrings by Irish brand All the Falling Stars and a necklace by Welsh designer Spells of Love.

She added a splash of colour with her scarf. Rather than wear a designer style, she chose  a cotton scarf in the colours of the Union Jack from the Scout store. Available for £8.50 on the Scouts website, this style is primarily used by members when they're travelling abroad - illustrating the Duchess's commitment to representing Britain at all times, even (and especially) at home.

The Duchess, who was a Brownie in her school days, has worn the scarf before, most notably during a snowy excursion to the Scouts headquarters in March 2019.

Her outfit is similar to one we have seen many times over the years - mostly recently in June, on another damp day when she visited Fakenham Garden Centre in Norfolk and wore button-down shirt, black skinny jeans, a Fjallraven vest, and green Superga trainers.

In both instances, her clothes have allowed her to stay warm and move easily - today, she was toasting marshmallows around a fire with the children and making arts and crafts. The visit also marked Kate being named joint president of the Scouts, a position she is sharing with the Queen's cousin, the Duke of Kent. It is her first role as president of any association.

As the likelihood of lockdown 2.0 increases, we are set to see the Duchess of Cambridge at far more outdoor engagements over the months ahead - and far fewer of the tiara-and-gown events she attended in the past. Her outfits may not be quite so eye-catching, but given how comfortable she looks in her skinnies, shirt and waistcoat, it is a turn of events Kate is no doubt delighted by.
