Demi Moore's Met Gala Look Was Actually Made of Silk Wallpaper

Met Gala attendees didn’t shy away from leaning into the dress code for 2024: The Garden of Time. While many celebrities nailed the theme for the event—which celebrated The Costume Institute’s new exhibition titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”—the best looks of the night were made of archival wallpaper, lavish bedding, and an iconic pattern that we’d easily love to see in our home.
Each outfit debuted on a white-and-teal carpet (which was praised by many but also likened to a tie-dye T-shirt, a spray paint job, and even mold). An enchanted forest mural backdrop, foliage-covered walls, and a hazy purple ceiling set the scene. One of the most enthralling looks to grace the steps was Demi Moore’s custom Harris Reed gown “made with a 60-year-old panel of archival silk wallpaper,” her stylist Brad Goreski shared on Instagram.
The wallpaper by Fromental had a peony design and was soaked to create a pink-and-gray floral pattern on the gown. Fashion designer Reed wrote on Instagram that it was “such a treat to play with something so delicate and fragile and give it a second life, to make almost life-size paper dolls, a flower in perfect bloom as its decays fully wrapped in thorns.”
Tennis icon Maria Sharapova took an imaginably cozy approach by doing what every bedding enthusiast has dreamed of: She wore a gown made of bed sheets. The organic cotton fabric by Boll & Branch was part of her custom Atelier Prabal gown. Fashion designer Prabal Gurung revealed that it took roughly 20 yards of fabric and more than 300 hours to make the dress. “It's one of the most luxurious, finest cottons that I've ever seen and touched,” Gurung said in a Q&A with Boll & Branch, noting he values how the fabric is sustainably made. “I grew up in India, so finding a cotton fabric made in an exceptionally luxurious way felt like the chicest expression of this theme and a beautiful way to tie in our values.”
While the bedding isn’t available in the exact daffodil yellow color Sharapova wore, Boll & Branch did release a limited quantity of white sheets in the same fabric.
Speaking of incredible fabrics, interior designer Shelia Bridges's Harlem Toile pattern made its way onto the carpet. ABC News correspondent Debroah Roberts wore a vibrant yellow gown featuring the pattern. Bridges created it in collaboration with Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier.
“When we talk about a garden theme, I just think this is so perfect,” Roberts said of the dress in a video on Instagram. “First of all, it's a throwback to 18th–century France, a little modern take with America, girls jumping rope, playing basketball. But most important, it's a gown that I've owned, so sustainability is part of the deal.”
With the success of these looks, we can't help but feel a future Met Gala could easily have a dress code or theme specifically tied to interior design. In the meantime, we'll keep analyzing the carpet, backdrops, and standout looks that marry the two creative worlds.
