Depressed man claims trial to illegal pistol possession


KANGAR: An unemployed man claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of illegal possession of a pistol outside the state’s Home Ministry Complex last month.

Mohd Fahmie Abdul Rahman, 29, is charged with possession of a .9mm Calibre pistol and a magazine outside the complex here about 8.30pm on March 23.

He is charged under Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalties) 1971 and is staring at maximum 14 years’ jail sentence and a minimum of six strokes of rotan.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Amril Johari prosecuted while the accused was represented by lawyer Zulkifli Awang.

Judge Azman Abu Hassan allowed for the accused to be placed in a single cell room at the Perlis Correctional Centre since he is suffering from depression and has the tendency to act violently.

The court fixed May 8 for mention.
