SINGAPORE — The footballing world was in mourning after Diego Maradona died of a heart attack on Wednesday (25 November). He was 60 years old.

The Argentinian is one of the greatest footballers to have graced the sport. With astonishing skills and indomitable willpower, he single-handedly led his country to win the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and his Italian club Napoli to two Serie A league titles in 1987 and 1990.

Yet, Maradona was a controversial figure throughout his life – scoring goals with his hand, being expelled from the 1994 World Cup after testing positive for doping, regularly checking into rehabilitation clinics for drug abuse.

Nonetheless, from the outpouring of grief following news of his death, his legions of fans were willing to overlook his transgressions and remember him for his amazing feats on the football pitch.
