The director of “Big Little Lies” doesn’t want a Season 2, and agree to disagree
HBO’s limited series, Big Little Lies came to a stunning conclusion Sunday night, and while many of the storylines on the show were wrapped up, so many more questions were raised. Just from the title “limited series” we shouldn’t hold our breath for more drama with Madeline, Jane, and Celeste (and also Renata and Bonnie), but come on. The end of the show clearly left the door open for more. Big Little Lies Season 2, anyone?
If HBO is asking, we want more.
The only problem is that the director of Big Little Lies, Jean-Marc Vallée doesn’t want more, and agree to disagree about that, sir. The limited series was based off of a book with the same name, and both book and show had basically the same conclusion. There are a few things the show didn’t touch on that the book included, and even still, there are still a few things left completely unresolved (the detective doesn’t trust the moms for a reason). So, if HBO wanted more episodes, they could easily do it. But Vallée is like, NOPE.
“This is the perfect ending,” Vallée explained to Vulture. “There is no way [for a Season 2]; there’s no reason to make a season two. That was meant to be a one-time deal, and it’s finishing in a way where it’s for the audience to imagine what can happen. If we do a season two, we’ll break that beautiful thing and spoil it.”
Or maybe Season 2 will be even more beautiful, Vallée. Just saying.
Vallée does give us a little glimmer of hope that eve if we don’t get a Big Little Lies Season 2, we might get more TV shows from him — and the rad ladies he’s worked with.
“I mean, I’d love to work with Reese [Witherspoon] and Nicole [Kidman] and all these women again, but not to make a season two. I loved it. It’s a great show, and I’m so happy and excited to have been the chosen one to do this.”
Okay, we’ve got work to do. Time to find another thing for Vallée to adapt for Reese and Nicole (and Shailene and Laura and Zoe).
