Disney confirms Mulan is coming to Disney+ – but there's a twist
Mulan is heading to the House of Mouse's streaming service next month, but there's a twist.
Disney has announced that Mulan will land on Disney+ on September 4 in selected territories, where it will be offered to customers at a premium price of $29.99.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be available to watch in countries including the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and many Western European countries.
In territories where Mulan doesn't debut on Disney+, the film will be available to watch in cinemas.
"Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we've continued to build on the incredible success of Disney+ as we grow our global direct-to-consumer businesses," Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Chapek said in a statement.
"The global reach of our full portfolio of direct-to-consumer services now exceeds an astounding 100 million paid subscriptions – a significant milestone and a reaffirmation of our DTC strategy, which we view as key to the future growth of our company."
Directed by Niki Caro (The Zookeeper's Wife), Mulan stars Liu Yifei as the female warrior who disguises herself as a man in order to spare her elderly father from military service.
The film was originally set to be released on March 27, but it was then delayed three times due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In March, the movie had its first screenings where critics praised it, with one even going so far as to call Mulan "one of the best live-action adaptations of a Disney animated classic".
