Dr. Karan Raj has over 4.3 million followers on TikTok who tune into his advice, explanations and answers to common questions. This isn’t his first commentary on coffee, either. In March, one of his videos revealed an unknown key ingredient found in coffee that had people “regretting” watching the video.

In June, Dr. Raj listed three mistakes people make every single morning — and one, in particular, is drawing a lot of attention.
“Drinking coffee as soon as you wake up [is a mistake],” Dr. Raj says. “Maximum cortisol levels are produced between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., which naturally wakes you up. Drinking coffee between these times means you’re not getting the most out of the caffeine stimulatory effect. Instead, save it for when your cortisol dips.”
Cortisol is the body’s main stress hormone, and it works with the brain to control things like mood and motivation. Normally, cortisol levels rise during the early morning hours and then drop very low in the evening. If you sleep during the day and are up all night, the pattern reverses. Then, your cortisol levels will spike in the evening and lower in the morning.
Basically, Dr. Raj argues that you are already naturally at your most alert first thing in the morning — there is no need for you to drink coffee until probably around midday when your cortisol levels start to lower.
Commenters on Dr. Raj’s video seemed annoyed at the idea of changing a commonly loved lifestyle habit.
“People are not safe around me until I’ve had my morning coffee, though,” one person joked.
“But coffee is so nice,” another lamented.
“The first two [points] I’m on board with but BACK OFF FROM MY COFFEE,” someone wrote.
