SEMPORNA: Barisan Nasional is confident of sustaining strong grassroots support in this district, despite efforts by the opposition to reel them away, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

Zahid was speaking during a religious event here – a district known to be a stronghold of Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan), whose president, Semporna Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, quit Umno last year.

Without mentioning names, Zahid hinted that the door is open for disillusioned members of opposition parties to return to Umno and BN.

"We welcome them to take the step (to return to us).

"Despite the opposition’s attempts to add fuel to the fire, we are not going to be defensive.

"You know us – we are sincere and are putting in our efforts. So we are not going to be firefighters. The reality is that the people want the present government to continue (ruling)," he said to reporters after launching the Semporna Al-Quran Studies Academy.

The event also saw some 300 former members of Warisan presenting their membership forms as a symbol of their return to the BN coalition.
