Joshua Kimmich's delightful chip proved the difference in a cagey affair as Bayern Munich edged Der Klassiker 1-0 against Borussia Dortmund at an empty Signal Iduna Park.

In the first high-profile clash between the sides since the resumption of the Bundesliga season, Dortmund were without their famous 'Yellow Wall' of fans playing in front of an empty arena.

Jadon Sancho, still recovering from a calf injury, was not risked from the start while Thiago Alcantara was ruled out with a groin injury for Bayern Munich.

Rarely has Der Classiker ever been so eerie, so quiet inside Signal Iduna Park but the lack of noise in the stands did not appear to affect the players too much.

Indeed, it was Dortmund who nearly took the lead inside 30 seconds. Julian Brandt threaded a pass into the path of Thorgan Hazard and Manuel Neuer came storming off his line from the Bayern goal. The ball fell kindly to Erling Haaland, who squeezed his shot underneath Neuer but Jerome Boateng was there to hack it away off the line.

That start gave Dortmund some impetus to search for the opener and Brandt saw his effort beaten away by Neuer just a few minutes later, with Bayern struggling to get going.

But there is a reason why Hansi Flick's side have won 12 out of their last 13 Bundesliga games and they soon grew into the contest, with Lukasz Piszczek's goal-line clearance denying Serge Gnabry what would have been the opener after a free-flowing move.

Bayern took confidence from that piece of play and with Gnabry and Lewandowski linking up well, winger Kingsley Coman stung the gloves of Roman Burki with a ferocious right-footed effort.

Alphonso Davies showed once again why he has been tipped to become the best full-back in the world after a phenomenal sprint to deny Haaland, who had raced clear on goal.

But in a game of very few clear-cut opportunities, up stepped Joshua Kimmich with a piece of sheer genius.

Haaland lost possession in his own half and as the ball pinged around the central areas, Kimmich spotted Burki off his line and lifted a chip over the Austrian, who should have done better to claw it away.

But the audacity to attempt such a lob from 25 yards out was not lost on the Bayern players, who celebrated together having taken the lead just two minutes before half time.

Dortmund responded well after the break, with Lucien Favre making a double change - sending on Jadon Sancho and Emre Can and the hosts began to show their mettle as they searched for an equaliser, with Mohamed Dahoud and Haaland both going close.

Thorgan Hazard had a golden chance to level the score with 13 minutes left but skewed his effort just wide, although the flag would have gone up for offside. Then Dahoud forced a world-class stop from Neuer with a fierce 20-yard drive.

Bayern began to sit back and defend their slender advantage towards the end as Dortmund grew frustrated and the leaders kept their nerve to take a seven-point lead over Dortmund and with it, a giant step towards an eighth consecutive Bundesliga title.
