Dota 2: US$400,000 ESL One Malaysia 2022 coming to Resorts World Genting in August

Renowned tournament organiser ESL announced on Wednesday (8 June) that its events would be making a return to Southeast Asia with ESL One Malaysia 2022, which will feature 12 teams competing for their cut of a US$400,000 prize pool from 23 to 28 August.

The tournament's final weekend will be played out in front of a live audience at the Arena of Stars in Resorts World Genting, Malaysia.

ESL One Malaysia 2022 will also mark the first ESL Dota 2 tournament with a live audience in Southeast Asia since late 2019 and ESL One’s return to the region since ESL One Genting 2018.

The event is independent of the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) and will take place shortly after the 2021-2022 DPC Summer Major in Arlington, Texas, which will be held from 4 to 14 August.

ESL One Malaysia 2022 will kick off with a group stage that will be played in a LAN environment and with a best-of-two round-robin format.

Eight out of the 12 teams will be able to qualify for the playoffs, which will take place in front of a live audience at Resorts World Genting.

The playoffs will follow a double-elimination bracket with all matches being a best-of-three except for the grand finals, which will be a best-of-five series.

“When we hosted ESL One in Genting back in 2017 and 2018, the fans brought along an amazing atmosphere and the place has kept a special place in our hearts ever since,” said Artem Bykov, General Manager for Game Management at ESL, said in a press release.

“Esports across South East Asia has seen enormous growth online in the last two years, during a time when live events haven’t been possible in the region,” added Nick Vanzetti, Senior Vice President of Asia-Pacific Japan at ESL. “It’s exciting to finally be able to offer fans throughout the region the ability to connect in-person again, as we return to stadium-scale esports events with ESL One Malaysia.”

Tickets for ESL One Malaysia 2022 will become available starting on 10 June at 3 PM MYT. A variety of day and weekend tickets are available, with prices ranging between RM69 (around US$16) and RM399 (around US$90). You can check here for more details on ticket pricing and availability.

This year will be a big one for the Southeast Asian Dota 2 scene. Aside from ESL One's return to the region with ESL One Malaysia 2022, Southeast Asia will also be playing host to The International (TI) for the first time as TI11 is set to take place in Singapore this October.

TI11 will notably last longer than previous editions, taking place across 23 days, as it will feature a revamped format with a new last chance qualifier and a total of 30 participating teams.
