Dozens of firefighters deployed to put out massive fire in Geylang
About 60 firefighters were deployed to tackle a massive fire in Geylang that broke out in the early hours of Sunday (17 March) morning.
In a Facebook post, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it responded at about 1.10am to a fire at 643 Geylang Road. At the scene, the fire was found to be “raging and spreading to a row of double-storey shophouses”.
“Due to the structure of the shophouse units which share a common roof, as well as the high density of furniture and other combustible materials stored in some of the units, the fire had spread quickly from unit to unit,” said SCDF in its post.
“A total of seven shophouse units were on fire, five of which were fully engulfed in flames.”
Extinguished in three hours
The fire was extinguished in about three hours. A total of 17 emergency vehicles were deployed to handle the incident and up to nine handheld jets as well as three water monitors from the aerial appliances were used to bring the fire under control.
Damping down operations – which entail applying water to wet burnt surfaces to prevent any potential rekindling of fire – are ongoing. There were also no reported injuries in the incident, said SCDF.
