DPWH Bonus Not Unique, Says Valte

Manila, Philippines --- Government workers should not be jealous of the P10,000 anniversary bonus approved by the President for employees of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) because there is nothing unique about it, a Palace spokesperson said yesterday.

"Linawin po natin, kapag nagkakaroon po talaga sila ng anibersaryo, ang isang ahensiya o isang departamento ng pamahalaan, mayroon talagang instances na nagkakaroon, nagbibigay po iyong what they call the milestone anniversary bonuses doon ho sa mga kawani so hindi po ito unique sa DPWH (We want to make clear that when a government agency or department celebrates its anniversary, there are instances when milestone anniversary bonuses are given to workers. This is not unique to the DPWH," said Deputy Presidential Spokeswoman Abigail Valte.

During the DPWH's 115th anniversary celebration in Manila last Thursday, President Aquino announced that each employee of the DPWH will receive P10,000 anniversary bonus in recognition of their hard work.

The President also used the occasion to commend the DPWH for its cost-efficient implementation of infrastructure projects despite recently being blamed by some sectors for the massive flooding in Metro Manila.

"Hindi naman sana ito maging dahilan ng kanilang inggitan (We hope this will not be a reason for jealousy among government workers)," said Valte.

The distribution of anniversary bonus to DPWH employees came amid reports some government workers, especially weather forecasters, have not yet received their fair share of incentives.
Valte said President Aquino has assured the government will look into providing competitive salaries and perks to weather forecasters.

"Iyong pagdating naman po sa hazard and longevity pay, I think, in-explain din po ng Pangulo 'yan kahapon na talagang pinapatignan kasi kung ano naman po iyong benefits na dapat due to them, dapat ay maibigay (When it comes to hazard and longevity pay, I think the President has explained we will look to ensure the benefits that are due to them will be given)," Valte said.
On reports that performance bonuses of public teachers have not yet been given, Valte said she will inquire the status from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

He said the release of performance based bonus is not simultaneously given to government agencies, saying "this depends on the compliance of the agencies to the requirements."
