KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will continue to receive protection services from the Special Actions Unit (UTK).
This is as long as it is necessary said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
He adds that the protection services provided to the former prime minister, depends on the gravity of the threat which he faces.
“(The police) have only scaled down the security provided to Dr Mahathir.
“This depends on the gravity of the threat. If we believe that the threat is serious than we would beef up the security.
“We will provide him the necessary security service. In fact, even his wife (Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali) was provided with the same protection. We also monitor his house,” he said.
Fuzi was speaking to reporters after his visit to the UTK headquarters at the General Operations Force's Central Brigade Shooting Range Complex here in Cheras today.
Dr Mahathir, in a Facebook post on Nov 1, claimed that the security service from the Special Action Unit (UTK) provided to him had been retracted.
A photograph of him hugging two individuals, believed to be his bodyguards, was also circulated on social media shortly thereafter.
Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin later clarified that the viral photograph was taken last year and has been used by certain quarters to draw sympathy. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
