Drive-in Bavarian festival provides Oktoberfest flair

A drive-in Bavarian beer festival

Location: Landshut, Germany

Locals can collect drinks and culinary delights

usually found at 'Dult' folk festivals

such as beer, dumplings, stockfish and more

while pubs are closed and large gatherings banned

(SOUNDBITE) (German) LOCAL PUB OWNER AND CREATOR OF DRIVE-IN EVENT, PATRICK SCHMIDT, SAYING:

"It actually wasn't that easy to do. We actually didn't anticipate this rush when we started. The first weekend it felt like I sent the family out three times a day to get more cheese, we bought out wholesale supermarket sections."

The drive-in festival has been a success

but local fair businesses will still suffer losses

as a normal beer tent can seat around 4,000 people

(SOUNDBITE) (German) DRIVE-IN CUSTOMER, HEIDI PINKERT, SAYING:

"No, it isn't a replacement but it smells good... you have the smells, the music. The kids wanted to see it, of course it's not the 'Dult' it's a completely different thing but it's a nice idea and puts a smile on your face and that is the main thing at the moment!"
