With pubs, bars and restaurants remaining closed right now our summer socialising plans have taken a big hit. Thankfully though drive-in cinemas are on the way to save our summer.

The Drive In, will open on 4 July in the newly-launched Troubadour Meridian Water site in Enfield.

Those concerned about coronavirus risk can be assured the outdoor cinema experience has been planned with social distancing in mind and measures in place to provide a no-contact experience.

Cars will be required to park two metres apart, tickets will be scanned through closed windows (or organised by number plates) and cinema-goers can order their in-movie snacks through an app to be delivered to their car by staff on wheels.

As for the movie selection, you can catch a full range of classics such as Dirty Dancing, The Terminator, Shawshank Redemption, Bad Boys for Life and La La Land.

Tickets cost £35 per car, and while there’s no limit on the amount of people in your car, cinema staff require everyone to have their own seat and recommend sticking to your own household until government rules are relaxed.

And it isn’t the only drive through cinema in the pipeline, the similarly named @thedrivein will launch six shows at various locations across the UK including Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, Brighton and other major cities providing a retro cinema experience with a modern touch.

The Luna Cinema has also recently announced the soon-to-be launch of an outdoor cinema you can enjoy from the socially-distanced confines of your car.

Plans include a bespoke speaker system and food and drink services.

“With its immediate separation from other audience goers, drive-in cinema is the perfect solution to get people back to the big screen,” says George Wood, founder of the pop-up cinema company.

“[In the past] we were unsure of the quality of the sound experience when running through an FM frequency into the car radio, but we’re confident we have cracked it with an incredible in-car wireless speaker solution.”

Daisy Dukes Drive-in Cinema has also lined up 10 family favourites and blockbuster films to be shown in early July including The Greatest Showman, The Jungle Book and Frozen.

The entertainment company plans to have four screenings per day, lasting from morning to late night in their sites in York and Redcar.

A selection of classic flicks will be shown on large LED screens with the sound transmitted to the audience’s car radios from Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 5, with interaction between staff and customers kept to a minimum.

Cinestock is also currently putting together a socially-distanced indoor drive-in cinema, as well as an in-car comedy festival.

Consider your summer saved!
