Cult US skincare brand Drunk Elephant have been garnering plenty of attention since launching on UK shores late last year.

With its bright packaging and kitschy product names, it’s no surprise that the brand has plenty of visual appeal. But when it comes to great skincare, it all comes down to what inside the pretty packaging – and Drunk Elephant doesn’t disappoint. Founder Tiffany Masterson shares with GH her brand’s unique philosophy and we suss out what’s worth trying from the range.

What is Drunk Elephant?

Stay-at-home mum turned entrepreneur Tiffany Masterson created Drunk Elephant in 2012 after an endless search for products to keep her skin troubles in check.

“My vision was to build the brand based totally on the philosophy that avoiding 6 categories of ingredients and using only biocompatible ingredients that directly benefits the skin or to the safety and function of the formulation,” said Tiffany. No filler ingredients here!

The categories – dubbed by the brand as ‘Suspicious 6’ – are essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrance/dyes, and SLS. That’s not to say that skincare with these ingredients are bad, of course. Everything comes down to formulations and the EU’s strict regulations mean that what’s on the store shelves have been tested for safety. But if your skin is reactive to any of these ingredients or if you simply opt to avoid them, it’s worth keeping Drunk Elephant on your radar.

“We put the acid mantle, or protective barrier, first while supporting and nourishing the skin with non-fragrant oils along with potent, clean actives, non-stripping cleansers and loads of vitamins and antioxidants,” explained Tiffany.

Ultimately, what’s in the formula is just as important as what’s not in them and the brand incorporates tried and true ingredients (think Vitamin C, niacinamide, and salicylic acid) in its products.

Who is Drunk Elephant for?

Anyone whose skin is prone to sensitivity towards the aforementioned Suspicious 6 or if you’re just looking to try a new skincare line that’s equal parts luxurious and effective. Love luxury skincare but can’t tolerate the flowery, fanciful scents? Drunk Elephant is for you.

What's behind the name?

Eating fruits from Marula trees apparently get elephants all tipsy! Well, it's a myth but think of how cute that would look....

What else should I know?

The brand has recently branched out into body and haircare too. According to Tiffany, they’re also working on more sustainable packaging. Now on to the beauty team's favourite picks from the brand...

The Littles 4.0

If you don't know where to start, Tiffany recommends this sample set. It contains 8 of the brands hero products in sizes big enough for multiple uses (no flimsy sachets here). It's a complete skincare set with a cleanser, serums, moisturiser and SPF so you can completely overhaul your routine. It's a good one for on-the-go too.

Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser

Most thick balm cleansers take a lot of muscle in order to spread it on your skin but not this one, according to GH Beauty Intern Phoebe-Jane Lee. Instead, it effortlessly melts makeup away and emulsifies into a pleasant oil-milk texture that provides just enough 'slip' for a quick facial massage. For extra exfoliation, add on the Bamboo Booster once or twice a week.

Sweet Pitti Deodorant Cream

One of the brand's latest launches, this aluminium-free deodorant is a must-have for Beauty Editor Gillian Davies. It goes on creamy and just a small amount goes a long way. The gentle almond scent won't interfere with your perfume either. Just make sure it dries down before putting your clothes on.

Wild Marula Tangle Spray

Beauty Director Eve Cameron rates this leave-in mist for detangling her wavy, coloured hair without weighing it down. It provides heat protection, shine and gives natural movement to air-dried hair too.

T.L.C Framboos Glycolic Night Serum

Jam-packed with a glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid, this silky serum works hard to impart a fresher, brighter complexion overnight says Senior Beauty Editor Alexandra Friend. The potent formula is cushioned with aloe vera juice and tea leaf extracts to soothe and prevent sensitivity.
